Happy Belated Birthday to Daniel Freeman
Daniel Freeman is very important to Nebraska history. He was the first to file under the Homestead Act at the time of the Civil War. The government would grant you 160 acres but you had to live on it and farm it for several years.
His homestead is four miles outside of Beatrice, Nebraska and is a National Monument. They recently built a new building for the monument and it is quite impressive. One of Freeman's decendants, Beverly Kaplan, wrote a book about Freeman and it is available at the Homestead National Monument. Beverly Kaplan lives near Hickman.
Freeman was born on April 26, 1826. He died in 1908. He was married twice and had a number of children he raised on his homestead. I apologize for not getting this birthday posted on Monday, but I was traveling and got behind on my famous Nebraskan's birthdays.
