A Star is Born was shown as the opening movie for the Turner Classic Movies last night. This one was made in 1954. Judy Garland and James Mason costarred in this one. It was recently restored and because some of the film was damaged, stills filled in where the damage was done. They had found the complete sound track and included two songs that were cut from the original. It was a long movie with an intermission.
There are two other versions of a Star is Born--one in 1937 and one in 1976. The 1936 movie starred Janet Gaynor and Fredric March. This is my personal favorite. The 1976 remake starred Barbara Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. This is the one I saw first and in the theater.
The film was introduced by Robert Osborne and was great to see on the big screen instead of on a television.
